This is Paramedic Science

A unique degree focused on rapid career progression

The four-year sandwich degree has been developed in collaboration with Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS), and offers a unique salaried sandwich year with YAS in your third year.

You will learn the fundamentals of paramedic theory and practice in both university and ambulance service teaching facilities. You'll also experience clinical placements in the ambulance service (and other selected clinical practice areas) under the direct supervision of mentors, as well as the sandwich year in which you are employed by YAS in a frontline clinical role.

As a graduate, you are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Paramedic, which allows you to practise in the UK.

Our BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science course is ranked 2nd in the UK in the Complete University Guide Paramedic Science Subject League Table 2023.

Paramedics are an essential part of the current and future NHS workforce. They have traditionally responded to 999 emergencies, but increasing demand for services has seen innovative ways of working across the emergency care system emerge, with paramedics now working in a wide range of environments. This means there are many career paths and specialisms open to you as a Paramedic Science graduate.

Meet our students and alumni

This is where I make a difference to people's lives

"Becoming a paramedic, I feel like that's one of the biggest jobs where you're going to help people the most and when someone phones an ambulance that's when people are at the most need. And I think if you can make a career out of doing something that you love then that should always be the goal."

Graeme, BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science

This is where I want to be

"It's a really strong bond and you already start to feel part of an ambulance family even while you're still training as a student. That aspect of giving that comes from this job is incredible and it's transformative for so many people who you can go out there and help."

Ken, BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science

Where Paramedic Science can take you

Due to our unique placement year with Yorkshire Ambulance Service, students will graduate with experience of working in a frontline clinical role. Graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the HCPC as a paramedic. This enables them to work in UK ambulance services as well as in other specialist clinical areas.

As well as working in the ambulance service, graduates also have opportunities to work in a range of settings including education, research, advanced primary care and in the community. Paramedics can also work at sporting events, with firefighters and in other diverse settings.

This provides a real alternative to other healthcare careers such as medicine, nursing, midwifery or other allied health pathways.
