The skills you'll develop

"Studying towards a degree within the Accounting, Finance & Economics (AFE) subject areas in the University of Bradford’s School of Management provides you with an invaluable opportunity to gain fantastically useful skills and knowledge critical to the functioning of private firms, public agencies, departments and government and third sector non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

"In Accounting we go well beyond simply considering 'what is a balance sheet?' in terms of the balance between assets and liabilities of firms. We consider all aspects of financial accounting, performance ratios, benchmarking, information reporting and global reporting standards such as IFRS, GAAP, US GAAP and a variety of other structured ways to report firms performance and structure. We also focus on cost accounting, otherwise known as 'management accounting' through consideration of how costs build up throughout an organization, and the critical determinants of how companies can 'break even' and survive – all essential knowledge in the unprecedented challenges we face at the moment as we emerge from the Covid pandemic.

"In Finance we have experts in mathematical finance and stochastics, alongside others with more applied and corporate focus. Here you will learn how companies are valued and why, what financial performance benchmarks are and how they are useful to you in your future professional careers. We also look at how the day-to-day operations of firms can lead to potentially huge efficiencies and impact on bottom line profitability, in subject areas such as working capital management.  Furthermore, we look at project appraisal and valuation - so if you are a budding entrepreneur or manager and want to create a sustainable additional business or project, then how do you go about valuing it and what investment decisions do you make?

"Finally, in terms of Economics and we are lucky to have a range of well-known experts who excel in providing a supportive learning environment where you can get to grips with the crucial elements of business economics, macroeconomics and start to get an appreciation of how and why macroeconomies work and function in the ways they do, and of the topical problems and challenges we, as a society, face today."
