Overview

The three-year full-time degree in Nursing leads to a professional nursing qualification and eligibility to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

This is a practical, patient-centred course with equal amounts of theory and clinical practice which allows you to experience a range of healthcare services.

Studying in Bradford gives you experience of the mental health needs of a very diverse population. Your placements will cover a multi-ethnic city with pockets of affluence but also high levels of deprivation. You will also gain experience in a post-industrial town, a market town and the Yorkshire Dales, all with widely different communities experiencing different mental health problems.

You will receive highly rated support whilst you gain experience in challenging but rewarding clinical placements.

Professional Accreditation/Recognition

This course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as the statutory body and regulator of nursing and midwifery healthcare professions.

Why Bradford?

Bradford’s large geographical catchment area along with its historical welcome to different communities means that the population is very varied with longstanding communities from Eastern Europe, South Asia, and more recently West and Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. You will experience the interplay of culture, relocation, aculturalisation and the impact of deprivation on individuals’ mental wellbeing in very different communities covering the Yorkshire Dales to the Inner City suburbs and small Towns of Bradford.

Throughout your studies you will be taught by a team of professional nurses supported by other staff at the Faculty of Health Studies. You will have access to a suite of purpose-built practice simulation suites, which allow you to be taught and to practise your core clinical skills. These will include building and developing therapeutic relationships and specific psychological interventions to bed making, moving patients, measuring blood pressure to dispensing medication and giving injections, and participating in and then leading ward rounds. It will involve simulation of the seriously ill person using our interactive models.

The clinical wards house a variety of equipment which you would normally find in clinical practice.

Following graduation and registration, nurses are expected to continue to develop their knowledge and skills, and we offer a variety of short courses and postgraduate study options which allow nurses to specialise in areas of interest.

Nursing at Bradford was given 96% overall satisfaction by students in the National Student Survey 2016.

Typical offer: BBB / 120 UCAS points

A levels:

120 UCAS tariff points to include at least two full A-levels. There are no specific subject requirements.

BTEC Extended Diploma:

DDM — there are no specific subject requirements.

Applicants on Access Programmes:

120 UCAS tariff points from an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health Professions, Science or Social Science.

Plus minimum of:

GCSEs with grade C or grade 4, to include English Language, Mathematics, and Biology or Combined Science. Level 2 equivalencies are accepted.

Those applying with an Access course are only required to have GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C or grade 4. Level 2 equivalences are accepted in place of GCSE English Language and Mathematics.

All places are offered subject to satisfactory occupational health screening, a second reference and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Evidence of recent relevant study in the last 5 years is required — please contact us for further information.

The occupational health screening

All places are offered subject to satisfactory occupational health screening. This will involve completing an on-line occupational health questionnaire and attendance if required at a medical appointment.

Students on health care programmes must be able to meet the Health and Care Professions Council Standards of Proficiency (2013). Occupational health screening and assessment will consider the students’ health and wellbeing and their fitness to study and practice. Progress on the course is dependent on your continued fitness.

This screening process complies with Public Health England requirements for protection of the public and students and staff working in health and social care.

All offers of places are made subject to satisfactory health clearance and an agreement to undergo appropriate blood tests and immunisations.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

All places are also offered subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) (previously known as CRB check) disclosure. This is due to the fact that you may be required to work with children or vulnerable adults on your clinical placement, and will need to demonstrate that you can safely work with these groups upon HCPC registration.

English language requirements:

Minimum of IELTS 7.0 or equivalent (no sub-test lower than 7.0).

The course operates a spiral curriculum which in the first year introduces you to the knowledge and skills you will require. Year two develops this further and in year three you will consolidate and become proficient in mental health nursing.

In year two you will be given the opportunity to apply for a european nursing placement in one of our partner Universities and their linked healthcare systems.

Learning activities and assessment

The programme is framed around four core concepts:

  • direct clinical/patient care
  • leadership and collaborative practice
  • improving quality and developing practice
  • developing self and others.

The intention is to facilitate your development by introducing you to the fundamental knowledge and skills centred on core and field subjects required to meet the health needs of all patient/client groups, whilst ensuring you develop the specific in-depth knowledge and skills to meet the complex health needs of people from your chosen field of practice.

However, you will not only learn about and become competent nursing patients/clients in your own field of nursing but you will also become confident in nursing patients/clients who have an additional condition related to other fields of nursing. For example; learning to work with patients/service users with problems associated with your own field of nursing but who also have a learning disability.

Assessment methods include essays, case studies, reports, workbooks, communications exercise, written and clinical examinations and portfolios. Practice experience is continuously assessed with a mid-placement formal formative assessment and a formal summative assessment.

Students are required to complete a formative reflection on practice and feedback is provided by PATs. Students must submit a self-assessment for all summatively assessed work. Service users/carers are involved in all aspects of assessment, including setting assessments, providing evaluation and feedback in practice and summatively assessing presentations.

Placement

Placements form an integral part of this programme and you will be out on placement from Year 1 with our placement providers in the NHS and elsewhere.

Students are placed by a specific team who will ensure that you gain experience to meet the NMC requirements for registration, These will include NHS Community and Hospital placements that reflect the lifespan e.g. adolescent, adult and old age services, social services, nursing homes and the third and voluntary sector. During placement you will be supported by link lecturers from the University.

Career support

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Employment statistics

96.5% of our 2016 graduates in Nursing (Mental Health) found employment or went on to further study within six months of graduating.*

Career prospects

Mental Health Nursing prepares students to work in hospital wards, community teams, the independent and voluntary sectors, or specialist mental health services.

Most of our students gain employment locally and immediately upon completion.

Study Support

You will be allocated a Personal Academic Tutor, and participate in a buddy system with students in their final year.

During your placements are supported by a link lecturer.

In addition to standard study support through taught sessions, our Virtual Learning Environment allows students to access resources, participate in group work and submit work from anywhere in the world 24/7.

University central services are rich with support teams to assist students with every aspect of their journey through our degree programmes. Facilities

Clinical Wards

Our two clinical wards are specifically designed to give the look and feel of a hospital environment. The rooms are furnished with patients' beds, lockers, chairs, sinks and curtains as well as audio-visual equipment, internet and a teaching area.

A wide range of training aids and equipment are available in these rooms including:

  • Catheterisation, intramuscular and enema training aids
  • Skeletons
  • Adult  resuscitation mannequins
  • Electrocardiograph machine
  • Defibrillator
  • Dinamaps electronic blood pressure machine

These practice wards have been developed to allow students to learn the art and science of their chosen profession in a safe and relaxed environment.

Students currently use the wards to learn skills such as:

  • Bed making
  • Bed bathing
  • Eating and drinking
  • Elimination
  • Adult basic life support
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
  • Observational skills and physiological measurement including, temperature, pulse and blood pressure
  • Urinary catheterisation and catheter care
  • Injection technique
  • Medicine administration
  • Intravenous fluid replacement therapy
  • Asepsis

The second ward has moving and handling equipment with hoists including an overhead hoist and handling aids. There is also a full computer system, audio-visual equipment, a smartboard and SMOTS.

Wet Lab

The wet lab is a teaching room which used for up to 20 students, to teach a range of clinical skills from hand washing in sterile conditions to venepuncture and cannulation on training arms.

Students can also learn how to do a urinalysis test on the most up to date machines. This room is equipped with computer and audio visual equipment as well as a smartboard.

Financial support

From 1 August 2017, new students in England on nursing, midwifery and most allied health professional pre-registration courses, will have access to the standard student support package of tuition fee loans and support for living costs.
