This MEng programme equips you with the underlying knowledge and skills you need to become a creative Civil and Structural Engineer, capable of planning, designing and overseeing the construction of sustainable structures and transport infrastructure systems.
Civil and structural Engineering involves the design, construction and maintenance and repair infrastructure such as roads and bridges, buildings, and underground transport systems.
You’ll develop a broad knowledge of geotechnical, structural, environmental and management aspects of civil engineering, and gain the computing, mathematical, drawing and communication skills you need as an engineer.
On completion of the programme you’ll be able to enter range of graduate civil engineering roles. Our employability rate is 97% - one of the highest in the UK.

We offer a 5-year MEng version of the programme, which includes a placement year in industry. We also offer a 3-year BEng version of the programme – the additional year studied on this four-year programme enables further study of construction management, and advanced core technical subjects such as geotechnics and structural dynamics.
This course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators which includes the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Highway Engineers and the Institution of Highways and Transportation, and satisfies the educational base to becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). This course is also recognised by ENAEE (European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education).

The curriculum is informed by our Civil Engineering Industrial Advisory Board meaning you’ll be learning skills required by the sector, enhancing your employability.
Several members of our Advisory Board deliver lectures, provide site visits, and mentor and employ students.
You will be taught by research-active staff who are experts in their fields, and serve in numerous national and international committees. This ensures that you are taught the latest advances in the subject areas, and are given exciting opportunities to work on ongoing research projects.
We offer unique laboratory teaching and research facilities, including:

You’ll join a relatively small cohort of students in which everyone is valued and looked after by members of staff, who maintain an open-door policy with all our students and offer tailored advice and support.
We have a very active student-led Civil Engineering Society (CivSoc), which provides a non-academic platform for interaction between students and academics, industrialists and professional institutions. CivSoc organises several talks, site visits and tournaments every year.

Applicants on Access Programmes:
128 UCAS tariff points from an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Engineering or Science and Engineering - must include a minimum of 12 credits in Maths at minimum Merit.
Plus minimum of:
GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C or 4 (equivalents accepted).
English language requirements:
Minimum IELTS at 6.0 or the equivalent.

The programme is intended to enable graduates to develop the engineering, design, management, leadership, business and personal skills required to become professional Civil and/or Structural Engineers and in doing so, also equip them for careers in other professions.
- Engineering Mathematics (20 credits) - core
To develop mathematical knowledge, understanding and skills in fundamental topics of mathematics so that students can later build on these to describe, model, analyse and evaluate engineering problems using a range of mathematical techniques and appropriate software for calculations.
- Computer Aided Engineering (20 credits) - core
To provide an appreciation of computer aided design, analysis and simulation methods over a range of engineering disciplines (Chemical, Civil, Mechanical and Medical) and to provide experience of the use of industry standard CAE tools through design, modelling, simulation, analysis of structures, processes, systems or components.
- Materials Technology & Structural Mechanics (20 credits) - core
Provides an introduction to engineering materials and their properties, with particular reference to their manufacturing technology, selection and different industrial applications.
- Skills for Engineering (20 credits) - core
The module is designed to provide a project based hands on team based module with integrates the learning from other modules during the first year.
- Surveying and Building Information Modelling (BIM) (20 credits) - core
To provide practical experience in the use of surveying instruments and basic surveying techniques.
- Fluid Mechanics 1 (10 credits) - core
To understand the basic concepts that describes the mechanical behaviour of fluids.
- Construction Materials (10 credits) - core
Introduce basic concepts and develop an understanding of engineering properties of construction materials including geotechnical materials (soils, rocks) and structural construction materials (concrete, timber and masonry etc).
At the end of Year 1, students will be eligible to exit with the award of Certificate of Higher Education if they have successfully completed at least 120 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.
- Further Engineering Mathematics and Statistics (20 credits) - core
To establish an appreciation and working knowledge of the premise that analytical (deterministic) and statistical tools are components of a larger integrated tool kit for addressing and evaluating multiple solutions to a variety of engineering-based problems.
- Steel and Concrete Design (20 credits) – core
Using first principles and structural Eurocodes to design structural steelwork and concrete elements.
- Structural Mechanics & Analysis (20 credits) – core
To evaluate the concepts of a general three-dimensional stress and strain state and to relate these concepts to the behaviour of actual materials and structural elements.
- Soil Mechanics (20 credits) – core
To develop an understanding of the behaviour of soils, and the factors influencing their behaviour.
- Financial & Project Management (20 credits) – core
Enable students to acquire a sound understanding of the financial and accounting principles, and apply these principles for decision making and control purposes in a commercial business environment.
- Fluid Mechanics 2 (10 credits) – core
To examine the principles of fluid flow, with an emphasis on the analysis of flows that are common in engineering fields.
- Civil Design Project (10 credits) – core
At the end of Year 2, students will be eligible to exit with the award of Diploma of Higher Education if they have successfully completed at least 240 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.

The students will be able to acquire a deep understanding of the theories and practices of six sigma and associated quality assurance and management principles, and directly apply them to a variety of product and service industries.
- Transportation Studies (10 credits) – optional
To critically evaluate the design of road junctions and links, policy formulation, with reference to needs, funding, forecasts and sustainability. To design and evaluate maintenance requirements of transport infrastructure.
- Open Channel Hydraulics (10 credits) – optional
To understand general hydraulic principles of free surface flows and solve practical engineering problems related to free surface flows.
- Feasibility Study (20 credits) – core
To develop solutions to civil engineering problems by a process of critical appraisal & review using information obtained from a reconnaissance survey and other sources.
- Geotechnical and Civil Engineering Design (20 credits) – core
To extend the application of the fundamental principles of soil behaviour introduced in Soil Mechanics, with particular emphasis on analysis and design of foundation and earth retaining structures.
- Sustainability in the Built Environment (20 credits) – core
To provide students with an understanding of the concepts, principles and assessment techniques of sustainable development in the built environment.
- Steel & Composite (10 credits) – core
To introduce to students the concept of steel and composite design and their applications in engineering. To provide a basic means for design and analysis of steel and composite structures and to familiarise students with a range of typical processing techniques.
Students will be eligible to exit with the award of Ordinary Degree of Bachelor if they have successfully completed at least 300 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.
Students will be eligible for the award of BEng Degree if they have successfully completed at least 360 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.
- Advanced Design Project (30 credits) – core
To enable the students to further develop their research and problem-solving skills to a high level by advanced work on a research project of their own design; to allow the students to further develop the skills of writing a formal, academic dissertation.
- Advanced Geotechnics (20 credits) – core
To extend the application of the fundamental principles of soil behaviour introduced in Soil Mechanics 1 and Geotechnical and Civil Engineering Design modules.
- Construction Management (20 credits) – core
To provide students with an understanding of the concepts and techniques of construction and project management with particular reference to their use in an engineering, design and technological organisational environment.
- Computational Fluid Dynamics (10 credits) – optional
To understand fundamental principles of the advanced numerical simulations in hydrodynamics. There will be an emphasis on developing practical skills to build numerical models to simulate free surface flows in practical contexts.
- Design Optimisation (10 credits) – optional
To establish an appreciation for the role of optimisation in modern engineering practice and to provide evidence for the premise that optimisation is one component of an integrated tool kit for addressing and evaluating multiple solutions to a variety of engineering-based problems.
- Structural Dynamics & Earthquake Engineering (20 credits) - core

To develop an understanding of the basic concepts of engineering hydrology such as rainfall measurements, rainfall run-off and flood estimation methods.
- Risk Management (10 credits) - optional
Acquire a deep understanding of the concepts and principles of risk management and its interaction with other management activities, and directly apply them in a range of product and service industries.
- Engineering Computational Methods (10 credits) – optional
To critically review the application of the Finite Element (FE) method as a tool for engineering analysis.
Students will be eligible for the award of MEng Degree if they have successfully completed at least 480 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.
Learning activities and assessment
We deliver our modules using innovative teaching methods that combine theory with practice.
You’ll undertake a range of design exercises where you’ll address real industry problems/scenarios.
These projects enable you to apply your theoretical knowledge, while improving your communication skills.
Teaching methods include formal lectures, case studies, tutorial exercises, practical demonstrations, site visits, directed learning, group and individual work. Modules are assessed through formal written examinations, class tests, analytical and experimental coursework, presentations.
All of our programmes offer the opportunity to study abroad, with two semesters at an international partner institution.
Career support and prospects
The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.
Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Civil Engineers are amongst the most employable and highly paid of all graduates. After six to seven years of experience you can satisfy the requirements of the professional institutions and become a Chartered Engineer, allowing you to move into more specialised areas.
