Maintenance Loan

Undergraduate home students can apply for a Maintenance Loan to help with living costs.

The amount you'll get depends on your family income and is calculated by Student Finance England. You will have to pay the loan back.

Eligibility

Eligibility for funding depends on several factors, including the following:

  • Your place of study is a recognised degree provider
  • Your course is an officially recognised award
  • You are a UK or Irish citizen

If you have already have a degree, and have received a Maintenance loan, you may not be eligible for further funding.

A comprehensive list of the Maintenance loan eligibility criteria is available on the Student Finance England website.

Loan repayment

Students starting in September 2022 will start making loan repayments when earning over £27,295. The graduate would continue making repayments, either until total debt was cleared or until 30 years had passed.

From September 2023, loan repayments will be based on earnings above £25,000.

They will repay 9% of what they earn above the £25,000 threshold. For example, a graduate earning £30,000 per year would be earning £5000 above the £25,000 threshold. The following calculation shows the amount they would repay each month:

  • Subtract £25,000 from £30,000 = £5,000
  • Calculate 9% of £5,000
  • This equals £450 per year or £37.50 per month

The graduate would continue making repayments, either until total debt was cleared or until 40 years had passed.
