Mitrinovic/New Atlantis Archive Cataloguing Project
The Cataloguing Project 2014-15
2014-15 saw Special Collections embark on a major externally funded project to bring the Mitrinovic / New Atlantis Archive to life. This Archive was created by charismatic Yugoslav philosopher Dmitrije Mitrinovic and his circle as they worked to explore all knowledge and find ways to a lasting peace in Europe. It documents the inter-war ferment of ideas about culture and society and offers huge research potential in many subject areas (literature, art, politics, philosophy etc). However, it was a large and complex collection, in poor condition.
Thanks to the Mitrinovic Foundation, we were able to employ a project archivist to catalogue this collection. Emma Burgham worked with us from 8 July 2014-5 November 2015. She has done a fantastic job in uncovering and sharing the stories in this internationally significant archive. The finished catalogue is available via the collection web page (link in the above paragraph) and you can see some of Emma's discoveries on the project blog, The Eleventh Hour.
Now we understand the content and significance of the Archive, we are working with the Foundation to find ways to bring it to wider audiences.
We are now scoping 'Mitrinovic II', a research project based on the extensive provenance/annotations to be found in Mitrinovic's Library. We hope to make significant progress on this work in 2017-2018.
