South Asian Heritage Month

South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) is an annual awareness month that runs from 18 July to 17 August each year.

South Heritage Month is a time to:

  • Commemorate the resilience and contributions of South Asian communities,

  • Celebrate the richness and diversity of South Asian cultures, and

  • Educate others through storytelling, shared experiences, and cultural expression.

Importantly, the month provides space for people of South Asian heritage to reclaim and affirm their identities, sharing personal stories that reflect their multifaceted experiences, from historical migration to contemporary life.

Through Roots to Routes, we remember, honour, and preserve these powerful narratives, ensuring they continue to inspire generations to come.

Any discussion of the future is incomplete without a consideration of the past. As we try and chart a path into an unknown future, we should make sure not to leave our heritage behind, but to carry it forward with us in a manner that is compatible with the future we envision and honours the rich cultural traditions from which that future emerged as well.

Staff networks

We have staff networks to raise awareness and provide support to help shape the culture and values of our University. They are an effective channel of communication and play an advisory role for University leaders. Below is information about our International and Race Equality Staff Networks, you can read about other Staff Networks.

International staff network

The international staff network is a forum for all overseas staff and those identifying as international staff (irrespective of citizenship/visa status, geography, and heritage).

The network provides a platform for sharing information and experiences on issues of mutual interest and an informal space for peer support.

The network aims to:

  • advance the university’s inclusion ethos and attract diverse global talents,
  • conduct orientation for new international staff, helping them navigate and adjust to life in Bradford,
  • support members' career development by sharing information on growth opportunities and creating a platform for knowledge exchange.

For more information or to join the network, email y.john@bradford.ac.uk.

  • promote the University’s approach to race equality and good race relations,
  • provide role models and advocates for progressing racial equality,
  • offer a support network for staff,
  • celebrate and promote social and cultural cohesion.
