Published:

A project jointly led by the University of Bradford's Professor Steve Rimmer is among the 25 shortlisted for the 2017 Newton Prize.

More than 150 Newton-funded projects and fellowships applied for the Newton Prize. Winners from each of the four eligible countries: India, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia, will be awarded up to £200,000.

Smart materials treating eye infections

Professor Steve Rimmer partnered with Dr Prashant Garg of the LV Prasad Institute, and Vamsi Venuganti from the Birla Institute of Technology in Hyderabad, India. The project looks into the development of diagnostic contact lenses which can detect eye infections and the administration of suitable treatment.

The project was nominated alongside nine further UK-Indian research partnerships. Two prize winners will be announced on 1 November 2017.

Solving global challenges

The Newton Prize aims to incentivise researchers to take part in the Newton Fund as partners with the UK. The concept for the Newton Prize was developed to demonstrate how UK partnerships with Newton countries are solving global challenges.

Full details about the Newton Prize and the shortlisted projects are on the Newton Fund website.
