Franco Saverio Rubertone

Dr. Ing. Rubertone Franco Saverio has developed his professional career to a very large extent, for about forty years, in Thales Alenia Space (formerly Selenia Space and after Alenia Space), holding leading responsibilities ranging from Engineering Technical Director, Space Business Development Director to Program Management (execution) Director. Before he retired, he was responsible for the Observation and Navigation Domain which encompass E2E Observation and Navigation System for technical, programmatic and business development activities.

He is currently an independent consultant to Thales Alenia Space.

During his professional career, he has consolidated the capability to work in an international environment, teaming with the highest ranking international Industries in the Space Commercial and Institutional Business and interfacing Institutional and/or Military, National/International/Foreign Agencies ( e.g ESA, NASA, Italian MoD, French MoD).

In 1976, he received a “summa cum laude” “Dottore Ingegnere” degree in electronic Engineering at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He has been awarded by AEI (Associazione Elettronica Italiana) as first classified in 1976 at the University of Rome, Engineering Faculty.

In 1976, he received a “summa cum laude” “Dottore Ingegnere” degree in electronic Engineering at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He has been awarded by AEI (Associazione Elettronica Italiana) as first classified in 1976 at the University of Rome, Engineering Faculty.

During his professional career, he has been involved with leading/key responsibilities in many E2E Observations System Programs acquisition or execution, which have been the milestone of the Italian and European Space activities. Among them, the Payload Radar Altimeter for ESA ( European Space Agency) ERS-1 Satellite (the first ESA/European Earth Observation Satellite), ERS-2 and ENVISAT and for the NASA-ASI (Italian Space Agency) Cassini Mission for Saturn observation, the X-bad SAR for the NASA Shuttle SIR-C mission, the Italian COSMO-SkyMed four X-Band SAR Satellite constellation, the Platform for the CSA (Canadian Space Agency) RADARSAT-2, the ESA Copernicus Sentinel 1 Satellite. Furthermore the acquisition of international contract in competition as Kompsat-5 and K425 for Korean Space Agency and very recently CIMR and ROSEL satellites for the ESA HPCM (High Priority Copernicus Missions).

He has also participated to Navigation Programs ( ESA Galileo) and Telecomuncation Programs (SICRAL 2)

His professional affiliations include IEEE ( Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) as Life Senior Member and to AEI ( Associazione Elettronica Italiana). He is author/ co-author of several articles/papers for conferences/proceedings. In addition, he is also Chairman in several Remote Sensing workshops and conferences.

Franco will lead and deliver the Earth Observation Satellite Systems module in the MSc Satellite Systems Engineering programme.
