Dr Hector Fenech
Dr Hector Fenech was the former Director of Future Satellite Systems Group at Eutelsat (1999-2020). He is an alum and former lecturer in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department (1983-1987) at the University of Bradford.
After obtaining his PhD degree from the University of Bradford in 1987, Hector led a very successful career in the satellite industry. Between 1987-1999, he was Head of the Satellite Communications Systems Group at the Communications Systems Research Ltd.. Hector joined Eutelsat in 1999 initially as a Systems Engineer and by the time he retired from Eutelsat in 2020, he was the Director of Future Satellite Systems Group.
Hector is Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fellow of the IET and Fellow of the IEEE. He has in-depth knowledge and extensive experience in satellite systems and has contributed significantly to the satellite industry. He is the holder of fourteen satellite system patents, published more than 90 journal and conference papers. He is the author of the book ‘High Throughput Satellites’ published by Artech House (May 2021).
As a Visiting Professor, Hector will carry out the following roles:
- Academic Advisor and MSc Space System Engineering programme team member
- Expert Specialist and Advisor to the Bradford-Renduchintala Space AI Centre
- Expert advisor, supervisor and consultant to external grant application and projects
Hector will also lead and deliver the Communication Satellite Systems in the MSc Satellite Systems Engineering programme.

Why did I join the Innovation and skills advisory board?
I read for my PhD at the University of Bradford and I am passionate about satellite communications. I see the Bradford-Renduchintala Centre for Space AI as an excellent forum where people can acquire the required skills and competences, and exchanges ideas to contribute to the future of the space industry. Satellite communications are going through a lot of changes on several dimensions including technical and technological innovation. This is where the Centre can contribute significantly not only on the academic level but also on the economic level by preparing engineers for the challenges of their career.
