About the School

This SatNEx V School, organised by the Bradford-Renduchintala Centre for Space AI on Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th October 2023, is focused on the applications of AI in satellite systems. The School brings together highly qualified speakers from industry, research, and academic institutions to discuss emerging applications, computing technologies, and dynamic design/processing techniques relevant to AI in various aspects of satellite systems operation. The content is designed to provide PhD students, early career researchers, and industry professionals with a firm grasp of the start-of-the-art and emerging trends in the subject.

Registered School participants will have the option to attend the 40th ICSSC Colloquium on Direct Satellite to Cellular Mobile Services on Monday 23rd October at a highly reduced student rate. The School program also includes a visit to the facilities of Filtronic, a UK designer and manufacturer of high-performance RF, microwave and mmWave solutions for various markets, including space.

The school fee is £150 per person in total, including access to the SatNEx V school, coffee and lunch breaks and dinners that are listed in the programme. 

Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Satellite Systems

Interest in the application of AI in various aspects of society has exploded within the last decade, and the field of satellite systems (and more generally space technologies) is no exception. AI enables optimal decisions and resource management to be achieved within a complex and dynamic space environment. AI facilitates the detection of historical patterns to predict what is likely to happen next (for example solar storms, intense rain events, traffic demand, etc). This is important because it enables the instigation of proactive rather than reactive measures to avoid disruption and ensure service reliability and quality as well as system resilience. In-orbit deployment of AI to extract essential information from the huge amount of raw data collected in space provides the option of transmitting only the most relevant data subset down to earth. This would greatly reduce the amount of signal power and radio spectrum required for data transmission from space to earth, thus enabling us to use space more sustainably and intelligently. These and other benefits and applications of AI in satellite systems (e.g., for ground segment operations and payload design) will be explored in detail along with discussions of related topics of federated learning, edge computing, and distributed satellite systems.

Exclusive Student Rate for 40th ICSSC 2023 Colloquium: Direct Satellite to Cellular Mobile Services

This year, the ICSSC 2023 Colloquium will be held the day before the SatNEx school, at the same location at the University of Bradford. Hence, we are delighted to invite SatNEx school participants to attend the Colloquium. For student participants (with student ID) of SatNEx school, we offer a reduced registration fee of the colloquium at £115 per person, which includes access to colloquium, coffee breaks and lunch break. The regular registration fee is £295.

The AIAA CMSTC (Communications Systems Technical Committee), under the auspices of the International Communication Satellite Systems Conference (ICSSC), has a long history of organizing successful colloquium events that address emerging technologies of interest to the satellite communications community. Last year’s 39th ICSSC Colloquium on Megaconstellations, held in Stresa Italy, and was attended by large number of experts across industry, academia, and government.

The topic of Satellite-to-Cell, or Direct-to-Mobile Service has been a rapidly evolving ecosystem and is a timely next step building upon on last year’s colloquium topic on Megaconstellations. In the interest of our target international audience for this colloquium, we have a comprehensive technical, business, and regulatory coverage for this year’s topic - Direct Satellite to Cellular Mobile Services. Specific areas to be addressed by the distinguished panel of experts include:

  • State of the Direct-to-Cell industry – technology and market
  • Standalone or integral part of global information highway
  • Business models (Emergency, IoT, enterprise, Defense): system’s financial viability
  • System designs - bent-pipe/processing payload Trade-offs and smart hybrid terminals
  • Retrofitting legacy constellations or designing new systems
  • User equipment as-is or custom additions for Direct-to-Cell
  • Prominent system funding, development and deployments
  • Longer term implications for communications industry – GEO, 5G, IoT
  • Regulatory: spectrum and orbital safety; industry government collaboration

The final session of the program will be reserved for questions from the audience in a workshop type setting. Colloquium registrants will be given access to the presentation slides for their personal use.
