Computer science: a world beyond coding

Oshan is in her first year of studying BSc (Hons) Computer Science at Bradford. She explains why she chose her course and how to make the most of your time at university.
My name is Oshan, and I am an international student from India, currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in BSc (Hons) Computer Science at the University of Bradford. I am also serving as a Course Student Representative for this academic year, bridging the gap between students and faculty.
My field of study
When it came to choosing a university course, curiosity and fascination led me towards this degree. Computer science is revolutionising industries from within and is at the core of innovation, efficiency and improvement of our daily lives. Resuming my studies in this field will put me at the forefront of technological advancement.
Curiosity
Initially, I held the common misconception that computer science is solely about coding, but the University of Bradford module structure revealed a world beyond the lines of code. The course is accredited by BCS which means it complies with rigorous academic and professional academic standards set out by British Computer Society (BCS).
Navigating: theory meets practice
The course has been phenomenal so far. It was fascinating to immerse myself in various aspects of computer science like databases, software development, and mathematics. However, what truly sets this course apart is the perfect balance between theoretical lectures and practical lab sessions, which gives me the chance to have a hands-on experience covering what I have learnt during lectures.
Beyond the classroom
Computer science offers a plethora of placements ranging from short summer placements to a full year abroad on a work or study placement. As a first-year student, I can choose summer school placements through the Turing Scheme or ISEP network. These placements not only build academic ability but help you gain real world experience.
The course also offers the Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) scheme which helps students connect with peers and arranges group tasks and discussions on various modules. The Computer Science department and University of Bradford Union of Students also supports the Pi Society (PiSoc), a British Computer Society group led by senior students. By joining the society, you can take part in study sessions, discussions, hackathons and socials gatherings.
Both PAL sessions and the PiSoc have significantly impacted my university life as they not only provide academic support but also help me to develop essentials skills and connect with a like-minded community.
Last but not least
Choosing to study this course at the University of Bradford has been one of the best decisions that I have made so far. The advice that I would like to give prospective students is to make the most of the opportunities university offers. Whether that means becoming a student representative, leading a PAL session, or applying for placements, make sure you actively participate and take every chance to learn and grow in this dynamic field.
