Biography

Study of human endothelial cell genetic and functional responses in health and inflammatory disease (atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer). These cells lining the blood vessels are master regulators of acute inflammation in health and chronic inflammation in disease. Low grade chronic inflammation at the blood vessel wall results in lesion formation and narrowing of the vessels (atherosclerotic plaques). Therefore cardiovascular disease and diabetes are key disorders where endothelial cells are dysfunctional. Skin disease such as psoriasis also have an important inflammatory vascular component. Intra-cellular signalling pathways important in endothelial cell proliferation, migration and apoptosis are currently under study in the Graham laboratory.
Outside the lab, interventions which reduce cardiovascular complications in diabetes, through development of patient self management is an active area of research, in collaboration with pharmacists and researchers in the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences and collaborators in Bangladesh (Professor Fatema Ashraf, Surawahardy  Hospital and Medical College

Research

Endothelial cell function in health and disease (atherosclerosis, diabetes, kidney disease, psoriasis) Mechanisms of compromised wound healing in chronic disease (diabetes). Epigenetic regulation of vascular cell function in diabetes. Mechanisms of angiogenesis relevant to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
