Using other university libraries
As a current student, research student or member of academic staff you are eligible to apply for SCONUL Access. This is a scheme which allows many of our students and academic staff to use other participating university libraries in the UK and Ireland.
Benefits
Undergraduate students
If you are on placement away from Bradford, travel to campus from outside Bradford or if you return to your family home during vacation, you can apply to use an academic library close to where you are to continue your studies.
Full time undergraduate students will usually have reference only access to physical resources while in the library and a peaceful academic environment in which to study.
Part time undergraduates, students on distance learning courses and some placement students may be eligible to borrow from some libraries.
Postgraduate students
If you are on placement away from Bradford, travel to campus from outside Bradford or if you return to your family home during vacation, you can apply to use an academic library close to where you are to continue your studies.
You will be able to access physical resources, while in the library, and a peaceful academic environment in which to study. You may also be able to borrow from some libraries.
Researcher students and academic staff
If you are working away from Bradford or another university library has a resource you need for your research, you can apply to use that library. Access for researchers and academic staff usually comes with borrowing from most libraries.
Applying for SCONUL Access
- Check the SCONUL Access web page to make sure the library you want to use is participating in the scheme.
- Ensure that you have no overdue books or fines on your library account. Otherwise, your application may be refused.
- Complete the application form on the SCONUL Access web page.
You will receive an email confirming that your application has been received and a second one to inform you whether your application has been approved.
Note: The application is processed by library staff and may take a few days, particularly at busy periods of the academic year.
Using your chosen university library
You are advised to contact your chosen library before visiting to:
- Find out what you need to take with you
- Check if there are any restrictions on when you can join. For example, some libraries are unable to accept new members during busy times such as during the start of the academic year and exams.
- Find out what facilities you can access at that library, as this can vary.
First visit to your chosen library
- Ensure you have received the application approval email.
- Take everything with you that your chosen library needs.
- Visit your chosen university library.
Note: please be aware that your SCONUL Access can be revoked for serious breaches of the rules at either the University of Bradford or the university library you have joined.
