Abuja Alumni Networking Event 18 April 2018
The University hosted a successful networking reception for Bradford alumni and friends in Abuja on Wednesday 16 April 2018. The event formed part of the University's delegation visit to West Africa, led by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Cantor.
Professor Uduak Archibong welcomed more than 50 alumni and guests to the reception at the Chelsea Hotel in Abuja and introduced members of the University delegation which also included Mark Garratt, Director of External Affairs, Professor Engobo Emeseh, Head of Law School; Dr Sheillah Chimungeni, Regional Manager for the Sub-Saharan Africa and America regions; Jonaid Khan, Alumni Manager; Zainab Garba-Sani, Academic Affairs Sabbatical Officer; and Eseoghene Oluwayomi, Recruitment Officer for Nigeria.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor talked about the University’s development as a world-leading technology university and highlighted the significant impact made by Bradford alumni worldwide including across Africa and in Nigeria. Professor Cantor also talked about the many ways Braduates could continue to support and contribute to the University’s future success.
The University has more than 4,000 alumni across Africa with over 1,200 known to be based in Nigeria. Professor Oshita Oshita, MA Conflict Resolution 2004, Director General of the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) welcomed the delegation to Nigeria on behalf of the alumni community in Abuja and presented Professor Brian Cantor and Mark Garratt with Nigerian Dashikis.
Professor Oshita also encouraged the alumni present to come together to form an active alumni community which could support the mobility, enterprise and employability of Braduates within Nigeria.
Earlier in the day, the delegation had led a very successful stakeholder seminar for Government Officials, Senior Higher Education professionals, industry bodies and the media. During the seminar, Vice-Chancellors of eight Nigerian universities signed statements of intent to join the World Technology Universities Network, which was promoted by the University of Bradford, and discussions were held around potential collaborations between Bradford and Nigerian Universities and organisations. The delegation also held productive meetings with senior officials of the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution and the Victim Support Fund, with both initiatives currently headed up by University of Bradford alumni.
