University to host event at the House of Commons

The University of Bradford is hosting a celebration event to mark the 20th Anniversary of Robotic Telescopes at the House of Commons tomorrow (Tuesday, 25 February).

The event will be chaired by Andrew Miller MP, Chair of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee on Tuesday 25 February 2014. It will celebrate how telescopes and science have inspired young people across the country to develop an interest in Space.

Dr John Baruch of the Bradford Robotic telescope said: “Computers and robots with their automation and intelligent manufacturing are changing the nature of work through the whole of the manufacturing and service industries. For some there is a race to the bottom with the lowest wage costs, but in Britain we want to see high value creative and innovative jobs for a knowledge-based economy. Practical science is seen as a route into the innovation and creativity that will drive the knowledge economy of the future.”

Pupils from both primary and secondary schools that have taken part in the project will be presenting their projects on Space during the event.

The celebration is co-led by The University of Bradford and the other partners involved, Liverpool John Moores University, The Faulkes Telescope, The European Space Education Resource Office and The Langton Star Centre at Simon Langton School in Kent. Collectively, they will position the UK as the industry leader in developing and accelerating education technology in UK schools, to help build the Knowledge Economy. The event is being supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
