University of Bradford to host Runnymede event
The University of Bradford will host an event next week which will look at racism in modern life.
‘The R Word’ will celebrate and inspire anti-discrimination actions, by creating an open platform for debate and discussion about racism.
The event is one of four Runnymede public engagement events around their campaign ‘End Racism This Generation.’ Runnymede is the UK’s leading independent race equality think tank, it generates intelligence for a multi-ethnic Britain through research, network building, leading debate, and policy engagement.
Yunis Alam, a lecturer in Social Sciences and Criminal Justice Studies at the University is chairing the event. Also speaking is Dr Omar Khan, Director of Runnymede; Aicha Bahij and Subira Ismail from the Students’ Union; Tony Reeves, Chief Executive of Bradford Council; and Nick Ahad, journalist and scriptwriter for television.
Yunis Alam, said: “Despite changes in legislation, social policy and even social attitudes around various forms of inequality, racism remains a part of contemporary societies.
“As citizens, we have a responsibility to challenge racism but sometimes, doing this is neither a simple nor easy undertaking. This event gives us an opportunity to explore the relevance and impact of racism and especially how it can be challenged, regardless of the form it takes."
The panel will discuss a range of data and research that suggests racism is still a feature of contemporary British life. The event seeks to explore and pursue means through which individuals, organisations and communities can challenge and eradicate racism and other forms of discrimination based on group or individual identities.
The event is being held at the University on Tuesday May 27, 6.30 – 9pm at the Norcroft Centre.
