The University of Bradford highly commended in Green Gown Awards
The University has been highly commended in the student engagement category of the Green Gown Awards for their 'Our Green Energy Challenge' project. This behavioural change project has driven utility reductions and slashed carbon emissions in the Green, the University's student village.
The project has achieved a 10% reduction in Electricity & Gas use and a 5% reduction in water use against 12/13 figures.
The project is unique to The Green with the students taking local ownership and different departments working together to develop a partnership around sustainability. Some of the initiatives included students using the vegetable patches at The Green and the catering team sending a personal chef to cook a two-course meal for the house which saved the most water.
Although narrowly missing out on first place, the team are proud to have been highly commended in such a prestigious award. The Awards recognise sustainability excellence within the tertiary education sector, as well as the environmental sector.
Russell Smith, Estates Manager at the University said: “We are extremely pleased with the award of highly commended in this year’s Green Gown awards.
“Student engagement is one of the most competitive categories in the award in the Green Gowns and it is extremely gratifying for an estates team to be acknowledged for influencing the student experience student behaviour in a positive manner.”
The Green Gown Awards Ceremony 2014 was held on Monday 3 November at the Whitworth Hall, The University of Manchester.
