Rockets, virtual dissections and Dr Who - The Appliance of Science as University of Bradford hosts Science Festival
The University of Bradford is inviting families to let their imaginations take flight as the Bradford Science Festival lands at the city campus.
See the nine-metre Skybolt rocket, take part in the paper plane challenge, learn about the chemistry of jelly and ice cream, virtually dissect a human body and find out about the visual effects behind Dr Who.
The University is hosting a Family Science Saturday as part of the festival on 18 October and will be offering lots of fun, hands-on activities showcasing the wonders of science, technology, engineering and maths, including a 3D screening of the Oscar-winning film Gravity.
There will also be a whole range of other activities to take part in with events happening at the University from Monday 20 to Wednesday 22 October.
An additional highlight on Thursday 23 Octoberwill be Will Cohen, founder-owner of BAFTA-winning visual effects company Milk, which has worked on Doctor Who and Sherlock as well as feature films, discussing visual effects production in a lecture at the Chesham Building at the University of Bradford, starting at 3pm. This event is part of the BAFTA Creative Skillset Guest Lecture Programme.
One of the stars of the show promises to be iStan, the University’s patient simulator. Use the touch-sensitive virtual dissection table to learn about anatomy, major organs and systems, administer drugs and treatments and see how the body responds.
Other activities will look at the bacteria that live on us, how what we eat affects us, the science behind computing and mobile devices, how bees and beetles contribute to personal care products, the effects of drugs, and there will be a nature trail around the world’s fourth greenest campus with the opportunity to make bird feeders.
