Contemporary Sociology and Crime

Module Aims

You will analyse the complex interactions of social theory, social structure, politics, public policy and ideology using a contemporary public case study.

You will develop skills in using a variety of documents and sources - academic, legislative, political and produced by public and private sector agencies - to understand a contemporary social issue and how it might be addressed. This issue will be drawn from UK public policy debates developments in the previous five years and will be chosen to demonstrate the interactions between social policy, social structure and crime. It may change from year to year depending on the salience of the topic and its usefulness for demonstrating how social problems are addressed in the contemporary UK.

You will gain a sound understanding of how to address social problems from within a wide range of agencies: governmental, voluntary, professional and private sector.
