Terry Carroll elected as Chair of Alumni Association at AGM

Published:

Terry Carroll has been elected as Chair of the Alumni Association at its Annual General Meeting held at the University on Saturday 20 January 2018. Four other alumni were elected on to the Associations' Executive Committee.

Terry had previously held the position of Interim Chair since the last AGM, in December 2016, and is elected for a three-year term. He graduated with a BSc in Business Studies in 1970 and went on to have a successful career in Financial Services and other industries in West Yorkshire.

There were two other candidates for Chair. The four other alumni voted onto the Executive Committee (comprising 12 elected members), were Iskren Ivanov, BA Graphics for games 2016; Emma Jones, BA (Hons) Development and Peace Studies 2013; Felix Kankwamba, BA Politics and Peace Studies 2013 and MA Media Studies 2014; and Thomas Whitford-Bartle, BSc Psychology 2015.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Shirley Congdon, gave an excellent presentation on recent developments at the University; and some exciting plans for a refresh of its academic portfolio via the interdisciplinary Learning Hub project.

The Head of Engagement and Partnerships, Eleanor Clyde-Evans, together with Alumni Manager, Jonaid Khan, provided an update on alumni engagement and development, and ambassador activity, delivered over the past year, and the key priorities of the Alumni and Development Office for 2018.

The Union Affairs Officer at Students' Union, Faiz Ilyas, introduced plans for a new life-membership scheme for alumni to apply to remain actively engaged with the Students' Union after graduation. This idea had been initiated through discussions between the Students' Union and the Alumni Associations' Executive Committee over the last year.

More than forty alumni attended the AGM with graduates from each decade of the University's 50-year history present, from 1966 to 2017. They were joined by more alumni and guests after lunch for the Association's Annual Lecture, titled "Is a more peaceful world possible?", delivered by Emeritus Professor Paul Rogers.

Photos from the AGM and Lecture are available on the Alumni Facebook page.

The next AGM will take place in January 2019. A date will be confirmed by the Alumni and Development Office over the coming months.
