Windscale Inquiry Records

Archive reference: Cwl WIN

In 1977 an application was made to Cumbria County Council and Copeland Borough Council by British Nuclear Fuels Limited for outline planning permission for a "plant for reprocessing irradiated oxide nuclear fuels and support site services, at their Windscale and Calder Works, Sellafield, Cumbria". This application was made the subject of a Public Local Inquiry under the Town and Country Planning Act 1971. As well as the applicants and the local authorities, representatives of government departments and environmental pressure groups were heard at the Inquiry.

This Collection, one of the Commonweal Archives, comprises over a hundred stencilled typescripts of proofs of evidence (i.e. written statements outlining evidence to be given to the Inquiry) by environmental pressure groups and local authorities but not the applicants (British Nuclear Fuels Limited). They were donated to Commonweal Collection by a member of Half Life Lancaster, one of the groups represented at the Inquiry.
