Peace Papers of Dorothy Freeborn Martin

Mrs Dorothy Freeborn Martin (1886-1974) was born Dorothy Roberts in Buttington, Montgomeryshire. She became involved with Christian pacifist movements after the First World War, an involvement that continued throughout her life. She was particularly interested in the work of the Commonwealth of World Citizens, of which she was a founder member.

The Archive was donated by Mrs Martin's daughter in 1974 and 1975. It includes correspondence, booklets, leaflets, and press cuttings from 1939 to about 1971. Subjects covered include pacifism, non-violent protest, nuclear disarmament and anti-colonialism. Mrs Martin corresponded extensively in 1961-1965 with Walton and Weybridge District Council, the local courts and the bailiff about withholding the portion of her local council rates that would have been spent on Civil Defence: two shillings and twopence.
