Shaun

BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering

After withdrawing from university in his second year due to deteriorating health, it took Shaun a decade to be able to achieve his dreams and reapply.

Studying BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering at Bradford is one of the best decisions he’s ever made and he’s looking forward to using his degree to help global communities when he graduates.

This is his story.

After finishing my A Levels, I knew university was the next step for me.

Facing health challenges

"I secured a place studying Geography at a nearby university, as I’d always enjoyed it at school."

"I had a great time, but unfortunately, I had to withdraw in my second year as my health deteriorated. This led to a decade-long struggle with severe mental health challenges which affected every part of my life."

Returning to education

"Despite being concerned about my age being a barrier, I kept reminding myself that being an adult learner shouldn’t stop me from pursuing my dreams."

"Thanks to the support of my family and groups like PALS (Patient Advice and Liason Service - NHS), I was able to better manage my mental health and start thinking about the direction I wanted my life to go in.

"After careful consideration, I decided to return to education with the aim of eventually applying to university.

"I completed three years at a local college in Kirklees before moving to Wakefield College, where I studied Access to Higher Education in Science.

"After looking around several universities, it was an Open Day at Bradford that sealed my decision.

"Meeting the faculty and staff and learning about the small class sizes, open door policies, and extensive lab time really excited me. I knew this was the place for me.

"I've always had a passion for science and engineering, and studying chemical engineering felt like the right fit."

Creating a sustainable future

"After deciding to return to university, I wanted to study a degree that offers vocational skills and job security."

"The BEng Chemical Engineering degree is helping me to fulfil my dreams of creating a better world for the future and making a positive impact on a large scale.

"I’d love to work in a field where I’m creating a sustainable future, in particular looking into sustainable fuels and water, and addressing issues around cleaning and access.

"These are significant global issues, and I think it would be incredible to play a part in helping to find solutions."

Choosing Bradford has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Bradford's Foundation Year

"Due to my past health concerns, I was nervous about going back to university. I wanted to study somewhere close to home."

"Bradford has an incredible community which immediately makes you feel welcome.

"I started with a Foundation Year which helped me build the knowledge and skills I needed for my degree, from teamwork and creative thinking, to problem-solving and team-leading.

"These skills are also essential in the workplace.

"The University isn’t just helping you to achieve a degree but is preparing you to progress in the real world. The faculty in my Foundation Year introduced me to The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and encouraged me to become a student member.

"IChemE is the professional body for chemical engineers which provides the necessary qualifications to be able to work in this field. Being a student member has given me a great insight into the industry beyond education."

Support for learning needs

"The University has also been incredibly supportive with my learning needs. After taking a free test which Bradford's Disability Service offers to all students, I discovered I have dyspraxia.

"They have provided fantastic support, which has been instrumental in my success. I’d confidently say that Bradford is one of the best universities when it comes to providing help and support to its students."

Since starting at Bradford I’ve embraced extracurricular activities.

Building connections

"During my time here I’ve been president of the Chemical Engineering Society and served on the Student Union council."

"These roles allow me to advocate for my fellow students and build connections across the university community, many of which I wouldn’t have made otherwise.

"Rugby has also been a huge part of my journey. Rejoining the sport gave me back the confidence I lost when my health declined, and being part of a team again has been incredible. It’s a fantastic way to make friends.

"One of my highlights is playing against the University of Huddersfield at Varsity and helping Bradford win for the first time in 10 years. I love being part of the club and team so much that I was president in my first year and team captain in my second."

Advice to future students

"It’s never too late and you should never give up on your dreams."

"My advice to anyone considering university, especially adult learners, is that it’s never too late. There’s no reason why anybody of any age can’t go to university and achieve a degree.

"Everyone has the right to learn, and if you're open to growth and knowledge, you can achieve your goals.

"A Foundation Year is also a great option if you feel you need to brush up on academic skills—it offers support and helps you prepare for the full degree. Never give up on your dreams."
