I am proud to say I am a University of Bradford nursing student and ultimately feel proud to be a Nurse

Why did you choose to study with Bradford?

I was a community carer for 8 years prior to starting my nursing degree. I loved it, but it was not challenging enough so that is why I progressed into Nursing.

The decision to become a University of Bradford student was easy. The lecturers visited my college to give tips on things like personal statement writing, and the university was very efficient in the whole application process through UCAS. They were the first to respond at every step.

I visited all the university open days in my area. The facilities at Bradford really impressed me. I was made to feel welcome in a relaxed atmosphere from the second I walked onto the university grounds. There were plenty of university representatives around to help and everyone seemed extremely organised. Bradford stood out among the rest.

What's it like being a student at the Mid Yorks Trust site in Dewsbury?

You don't blend in, you're not just another student - I feel like the lecturers really get to know each and every one of us. They manage to teach us the importance of professionalism while still being down-to-earth themselves.

In preparation for our placements we have been making use of our simulation suite, clinical ward and wet lab. We have been learning basic life support using a 'Resusci Anne', a defibrillator, and by taking manual blood pressures. We use simulated choking vests making it safe to practice backslaps and pelvic thrusts on each other, and we open airways using oral and nasal airway equipment. We're also learning aseptic wound care techniques. My personal favourite was a manakin ‘bottom’ in which we inserted suppositories. What makes it even better is that the facilities are all brand new at the Dewsbury site.

These facilities really help prepare us for placement in a safe environment where we can practice skills as often as we like. Usually it is just seminars that enable students to get hands-on, but even our lectures are interactive - not the typical lecture atmosphere you would expect to find in universities.

There is no single word good enough to describe the way I feel when I have helped someone in need

A personalised learning environment

I highly recommend the April intake for Adult Nursing at Dewsbury and District Hospital. The cohort is made up only of Adult Nurses and is smaller than the courses on the main campus - it's easy to make friends and you get real one-to-one support.

Being based in Dewsbury and District Hospital means from day one you feel more like a nurse, as Hospital staff facilities are our facilities too.
