this is nursing

A career where you make a difference

Nursing allows you to make a positive impact on peoples' lives. It’s not only about caring for the individual, but also their families and the communities in which they live.

We offer five nursing programmes:

  • Adult Nursing – promote health and wellbeing, support people in their recovery and empower individuals in managing their long-term conditions.
  • Child Nursing – work alongside multi-professional colleagues to support and care for infants, children and young people along with their families through a variety of acute and long-term illnesses.
  • Mental Health Nursing – support people with mental health conditions, providing both short-term and long-term care in clinical and community settings.
  • Nursing Associate Apprenticeship – support registered nurses to deliver and evaluate hands-on care with this Foundation Degree that helps you to become a Nursing Associate.
  • MNurse – combine both Bachelor’s and Master’s level study. This is an excellent choice if you’re considering specialising further or having a career in research or academia after you graduate.

All our nursing courses are approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council

This means you can apply to join the NMC register on graduation, enabling you to practise as a nurse in the UK.

This is where my vision becomes reality

"I was only 14 when I lost my dad to cancer. That experience steered me toward my career in healthcare. I started out working as a clinical support worker in the local hospital. I would help with admissions and other tasks. Seeing the impact that the doctors and nurses had inspired me, and I was encouraged by colleagues to take the next step and study to become a nurse."

Kiran Shahzadi, BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult)

This is where my kind nature flourishes

"My degree has been instrumental in getting me to where I am today. You learn so much, and after qualifying, I got a job in ICU at Pinderfields Hospital where I spent four months before transferring to the Stroke and Neurology Rehab Unit at Dewsbury Hospital."

Anees Mahmood, BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) - Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals

Where nursing can take you

Students are joining nursing education at an exciting time for the profession. New nursing standards are replacing old, nursing is high on the global political agenda and 2020 has been declared the Year of the Nurse and Midwife by the World Health Organisation.

It's a rewarding career which provides constant opportunities for professional growth, leadership development and collaborative working. Nurses often work in teams, providing care directly to patients in hospitals, operating theatres, clinics, schools and patient's homes.

As a registered nurse you'll have plenty of options to specialise in areas such as:

  • forensic nurse
  • prison nurse
  • paediatric nurse
  • occupational health nurse
  • army nurse
  • nutrition and fitness nurse
  • mental health nurse
