This is Biomedical Sciences

Understanding and overcoming illness

Biomedical Sciences studies human biology and disease and seeks to find new ways to treat patients through research. You'll learn both current techniques used in the study of human diseases in the NHS, and innovative technologies under development for experimental treatments.

Biomedical scientists have been working tirelessly since the pandemic began to develop diagnostic tests, run COVID testing laboratories, develop vaccines and support doctors in the urgent research into treatment and prevention strategies for the virus. It is a career at the cutting-edge of medical research.

Our Biomedical Science and Healthcare Science programmes are accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), and our healthcare science students spend a total of 50 weeks on NHS pathology lab placements over the course of their degree.

Bradford was the first university in the UK - and one of the first in the world - to introduce an undergraduate degree course in Biomedical Science.

You get to learn how your body works on a molecular level and see how disease affects your natural body processes, how everything fits in together so nicely and works in harmony.

Our facilities

Our Microbiology Lab is home to research which focuses on understanding how bacterial pathogens cause disease, and investigating the way in which colonisation of people and surfaces can be reduced.

Meet our students and alumni

I hope to inspire the next generation of scientists and make students aware of the variety of career options that a biosciences degree offers. There are a large number of lab-based careers such as in NHS and public health labs, research and development, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and food and water industries.
