Trans:it Engineering - Guidance Materials for Tutors

The aim of these units are to assist FE and school students to make the transition from Further Education (FE) to Higher Education (HE) as a part of their career progression in engineering, and to help them attain Professional Engineer status.

Contents of this section

Unit 1: You and Higher Education (Engineering)

This unit covers the meaning of the term ‘engineer’, the study of engineering in higher education, careers in engineering, women in engineering, professional bodies and registration, branches of engineering, and case studies of young engineers.

Unit 2: The Independent Engineering Student

This unit focuses particularly on sources of help and support in maths for engineering students. It also looks at some issues of particular concern to engineering students not covered elsewhere in this Section.

Unit 3: Time and Project Management

This unit looks at project management in engineering, including what’s involved and tools and resources to manage and present projects.

Unit 4: Managing Engineering Science

This unit highlights sources of information for underpinning science for engineering students, including searching online for resources, plus provides information on International System of Units, scales of measurement, materials an their properties, and engineering control systems.

Unit 5: Writing (Engineering)

This unit covers sources of information on writing technical engineering reports for industry or higher education and about searching for information online.

Unit 6: Working with Other Engineering Students

This unit gives examples of project group work in higher education at two universities: Glasgow and Liverpool.
