Rehearsed Reading: ‘Happy Place’ by Yasmeen Khan

Venue: Theatre in the Mill, University of Bradford

Time: 7.30pm

£5

Theatre in the Mill specialises in supporting artists to realise their vision.  We are delighted to be working with journalist, comedienne and writer Yasmeen Khan in the development of her new play exploring the contemporary British Asian experience.

Happy Place is the story of Zara, a British Asian Muslim journalist struggling to find a pigeon hole that fits. Zara writes about lifestyle, but should she be writing hard-hitting pieces about terrorism, like best friend Lauren? Covering themes of identity, consumerism and our current obsession with all things retro, Happy Place explores the dangers of avoiding your present by living in the past.

Yasmeen Khan is a freelance writer/performer and broadcaster/journalist. She is a graduate of the Royal Court's Critical Mass writer programme and is currently developing two plays commissioned for production in 2013. As a broadcaster, she presents documentaries for BBC Radio 4 on topics ranging from street harassment of women to British Asian issues and quirky social and cultural issues. Her programmes have been consistently listed as critic's choice in the papers. As one half of comedy sketch duo Asian Provocateurs Yasmeen was a finalist in the New Act of the Year competition and listed by the Sunday Times as one of the top female acts to see at Edinburgh 2011. Yasmeen has also devised and performed comedy and drama with the MUJU Crew, the Muslim-Jewish theatre group based at the Tricycle theatre.
