Association for Steel-Concrete Composite Structures

President's Welcome

I would like to extend to you a warm welcome to visit the web site of the Association for Steel – Concrete Composite Structures (ASCCS).

The Association was co-founded by Prof Masahide Tomii from Japan, Prof M. J. N. Priestley from New Zealand, Prof J.G. Potyondy from Canada and Prof Shan-Tong Zhong from China in 1985 with the purpose of promoting international cooperation in the development and applications in steel concrete composite structures.

One of the major initiatives of ASCCS is to organise international conference bringing together expertise on research in structural steel, composite and hybrid structures all around the world to promote international cooperation. I hope you enjoy browsing our website and I encourage you to seek more information by contacting the web site about your areas of interest in composite construction.

ASCCS columns database

The association has a database of summaries relating to tests on 1819 CFST columns and compares the test results with Eurocode 4 (BS EN 1994-1-1:2004 published 2005 (EC4), Ref. 1).  The reports in this database are available to members of the ASCCS and any researchers/industry with an interest in this area.

History of the Association for Steel-Concrete Composite Structures

In August 1985, the 1st International Conference on Steel-Concrete Composite Structures was held in Harbin, China, which was organized by former Harbin Architecture and Civil Engineering Institute.

In August 1988, the 2nd International Conference of ASCCS was held again in Harbin, China, organized by former Harbin Architecture and Civil Engineering Institute (currently Harbin Institute of Technology). At the conference, the international Association for Steel-Concrete Composite Structures was formally established. Prof. Shan-Tong Zhong from China was elected as the president of the association, Dr. C. D. Goode was appointed as general secretary. Each committee member serves for three years and president can only successively serve for two terms.

In June 2003, the 7th International ASCCS Conference was held in Sydney, Australia. Prof. Shan-Tong Zhong was elected as president. Prof. Brian Uy was re-appointed as general secretary. The Association Committee discussed and decided that the 8th International ASCCS Conference to be held in China, organized by Harbin Institute of Technology.

The 8th International ASCCS Conference was held in Harbin, China, in August 2006, China. Prof. Sumei Zhang was elected as President. Prof. Brian Uy was re-appointed as general secretary. Around 70 delegates attended the conference.

The 9th International Conference on Steel Concrete Composite and Hybrid Structures (ASCCS 2009) was held on 8-10 July 2009 in Leeds, UK. The conference was organised by the University of Leeds and attended by about 100 delegates. Prof. Dennis Lam was elected as President of ASCCS. During the committee meeting, the committee decided to hold the next ASCCS conference in Singapore to be led by Prof. Richard Liew.

The 10th conference was held in Singapore from 2-4 July 2012 chaired by Prof. Richard Liew from the National University of Singapore. The conference is jointly organised by the National University of Singapore and the Singapore Structural Steel Society. 155 papers, including 9 keynote papers and 146 contributed papers were presented in the conference. Contributions came from 28 counties covering a wide spectrum of topics including composite beams; composite bridges; composite columns; composite coupled wall; composite slabs; CFRP composite structures; dynamics, earthquake and impact; fire engineering; hybrid structures; progressive collapse; steel and composite connections; structural analysis; shear connections; thin-walled structures and sustainable design.

The 11th conference was chaired by Prof Lin Hai Han, Tsinghua University and held in Beijing, China, from 3-5 December 2015. 113 papers were presented at the conference. Contribution from 18 countries covered a wide range of topics included research, design and applications of the steel-concrete composite structures. Selected papers from the conference were published in a special edition by the Structures, an international journal by Elsevier.

The 12th conference was chaired by Prof Manuel Romero and held in Valencia, Spain from 27-29 June 2018. 123 papers from 24 countries were presented at the conference. Topics covered recent progress and advances in the research, design and practice of steel-concrete composite as well as hybrid structures. Once again, selected papers from the conference will be published in a special edition by the Structures, an international journal by Elsevier.

The 13th conference will be chaired by Prof Ben Young and will be held in Hong Kong in December 2021.

ASCCS Conference

The Association For Steel-Concrete Composite Structures hold a conference every 3 years in a different city around the world.  The conference is intended to provide a forum to discuss the recent progress and advances in the research, design and practice of steel-concrete composite as well as hybrid structures.
