Joy Ogundare

STRI complete over 100 trials on various maintenance products used in the sports turf industry to provide optimal turfgrass surfaces for any type of sport.

Joy’s project involved helping the company complete the following trials - Assessment of all aspects of playing performance, both subjective and objective, use of measuring equipment, laboratory analysis of nutrients, data analysis and Interpretation.

Why did you apply for the Summer Experience Internship?

I needed to get some experience outside the university where I was able to make new contacts and network. It gave me a chance to do something over the summer.

What did you enjoy about the Internship?

The people at STRI were very supportive. We were treated like staff and we were exposed to new things and now I can say I have done certain things. The staff gave us advice about our future and I now have experience of working in a lab.

What tips would you give to prospective students?

Find out about the company you are applying to. Take the opportunity and make the most of it and always be on time.

What support did you receive from Career Development Services?

The team helped me with my applications, visited me on my placement and walked me through every step of the placement. They also held an awards ceremony where I received a certificate.

What actions are you taking to improve your employability whilst at university?

I am completing some volunteering work whilst also working as an enrolment assistant, student ambassador and helping with the clearing helpline. By making the most of every opportunity and gaining skills I would not have otherwise has made me more focused.

What advice would you give to your fellow students about finding placement and work experience opportunities?
