Joseph Barton

Digital Marketing internship, Horton Housing

Joseph Barton

The project involved producing a film (10-15 minutes) which celebrates the 30th anniversary of Horton Housing.

The film will be used at conferences and events, on the company website, social media, and internally. It will showcase the work and history of the organisation.

Why did you apply for the Summer Experience Internship?

I applied to get some industry experience outside of education. I was not doing anything during the summer so I applied for Summer Experience. I got a lot out of it and the money was not bad either.

What did you enjoy about the Internship?

I liked that I was treated professionally and they treated me with respect even though I was a student. I was also given freedom and responsibility on the project.

“Joe has been an excellent student placement: friendly, reliable, professional and mature. I have enjoyed working with him and I know he has a bright future ahead of him. He has been an excellent ambassador for University of Bradford.”

What tips would you give to prospective students?

Don’t worry about working on a project, be honest with your employer, tell them what you can and can’t do. Avoid taking on too much pressure during your placement, at the end of the day you are still a student.

What support did you receive from Career Development Services?

I was visited on my placement by the Employer Services Team and I had the support when I needed it. When I completed my internship I received a certificate.

What actions are you taking to improve your employability whilst at university?

Currently I am trying to develop my skills. The placement was a big learning curve and now I can look back and improve my work. I have now become more professional and I now know what it is like to work with a client.

What advice would you give to your fellow students about finding placement and work experience opportunities?

Use the careers service and have a look at Jobs online there are lots of opportunities.

Any last words?

If you are passionate about your course it’s a good taster of what it is like to work. I enjoyed my experience and would recommend it to anyone who wants to get some work experience.
