Chapel Street Studio

Jonathan Whiting

Chapel Street Studio is a not-for-profit, value-led consortium of creative entrepreneurs collaborating to provide a one-stop shop for communication services.

To assist with the day-to-day of running our studio in Shipley, and help us to establish various aspects of our operations, such as communications and administration.

What did you do on your Internship?

I joined Chapel St. Studio at an exciting time of growth and was able to become a part of its long-term marketing strategy, offering guidance and support for its expansion in the local area. Alongside developing a marketing strategy I managed to boost social media presence by roughly 400% and created a ‘social media guide’ for Chapel to operate with.

Why did you apply for the Summer Experience Internship?

I wanted to try working in marketing to firstly see whether or not I would be be any good at it, and secondly to actually get some physical credentials on my CV showing I had experience in that area. It was also just a fantastic way to spend part of my summer, earning money and getting a flavour for life after University.

What did you enjoy about the Internship?

The biggest thing was solidifying the fact I was capable and developing my self-confidence that was such a rewarding facet of the experience. It was also brilliant to meet individuals that work and have connections in the local area, I feel much more apart of Bradford as a result. I have made friends and colleagues that I plan to keep for many years to come.

What tips would you give to prospective students?

DEFINITELY do a placement, it will help you in so many ways. You will have time to travel and ‘live a little’ soon, don’t be afraid to invest some of your time now into a placement opportunity.

What support did you receive from Career Development Services?

I’d not be in the position I am now without having gone through the University’s services. Big thanks especially to Urfan who sorted out my whole placement, without him I probably wouldn’t have managed to find anything and I’d be in a much tougher spot now coming up to my final few months at Uni.

What actions are you taking to improve your employability whilst at university?

As a result of my placement I am now setting up my own business and working in association with my placement provider, so I cannot understate how fantastic the opportunity I got was for me.

What advice would you give to your fellow students about finding placement and work experience opportunities?

Try and find a placement that really shouts out at you, if you do then your enthusiasm will come across naturally and make you an attractive candidate for your employer! Also, don’t give up if you fall at the first hurdle, unfortunately looking placements/jobs is a gruelling and often stressful process - just remember, it’s all worth it in the end, don’t give up!

Any last words?

Thank you to the Employer Services Team and Chapel St. Studio for opening my eyes, giving me self-belief and confidence. Signing up for my placement was literally life changing and maybe it could be for you too.
