The new part-time, distance learning MSc Advanced Pharmacy Practice (Primary Care) programme is designed for experienced pharmacists looking to develop new competencies at an advanced level.

It will enhance your ability to deliver safe and effective patient-centred care in partnership with multi-disciplinary teams.

The programme covers subjects such as:

  • pharmaceutical management of patients with complex clinical problems and co-morbidities
  • the organisational culture associated with working as a pharmacist in a GP Practice
  • quality and service improvement, and managing change
  • advanced communication
  • leadership and management

It enables you to:

  • effectively work with health and social care providers across the primary care setting
  • analyse, interpret and present medicines data to support decision making
  • develop and monitor evidence based practice guidelines
  • use consultation / communication skills to manage challenging situations
  • make independent therapeutic decisions / recommendations

Entry requirements

Students should:

  • be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) for a minimum of two years
  • be working in the UK
  • have access to patients in General Practice

English language requirements:

An IELTS score of 7.0 is required in each of the four subsets, in order to align our English language requirements with those of the regulatory body for practising pharmacists, the GPhC.

This programme provides education and training for experienced pharmacists, who may be changing sector, to develop advanced level knowledge and skills whilst working in a GP practice. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team is key to the development of relationships and experience in any clinical setting and the University of Bradford School of Pharmacy & Medical Sciences is well positioned to ensure that multidisciplinary learning and working is at the forefront of the course design due to its close involvement with programmes for other allied health professionals including physician associates, nurses and paramedics.

You will normally complete a 30 credit module each semester - 60 credits per year. The core 30 credit module in year 1 semester 1 is Foundations in Primary Care Practice. All other modules over the next 3 semesters can be picked according to your interests or development needs. The final year (3) comprises 2 further modules and needs to include the Quality and Service Improvement Module (if not previously undertaken), along with the Quality and Service Improvement Project

Learning activities and assessment

The mode of assessment will vary depending on your personal choice of modules. On induction, you will be guided through a learning needs analysis to help identify the most appropriate module choices for you.

Work based assessments will include pharmaceutical care plans, reflective journals and case based discussions. You will also undertake written assignments and OSCEs in some modules.

The topic for the final year Quality and Service Improvement project will be agreed between you, your GP Practice and the module tutor, allowing the outcomes of your project to direct and evaluate service improvement within your own workplace.

Career support

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Career prospects

There has been an increasing shift of health services into primary care, driven by NHS policy. It has been recognised that pharmacists are a crucial part of the plan to address the increased workforce needs in General Practice.

This programme is designed to provide education and training so that experienced pharmacists are able to work alongside GPs in a variety of senior roles identified and endorsed by the Royal College of General Practice (RCGP), the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) and the Primary Care Pharmacist Association (PCPA) in their document entitled ‘A guide for GPs considering employing a practice pharmacist’.

An MSc in Quality and Service improvement is highly adaptive to a variety of wider senior roles. Job specifications for higher level roles often require MSc or equivalent qualifications.

Study Support

The School of Pharmacy employs experienced pharmacists working in primary care and has close links with primary care practice to guide you in career choices.

You will have an academic tutor assigned to support you throughout the programme. You will map yourself against the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Advanced Pharmacy Framework, which will prepare you for application to the RPS Faculty.


The School of Pharmacy has an excellent national and international reputation in practice research.  Staff teaching on the programme are active members of the School’s Medicines Optimisation Research Group.
