Background & Prior Roles
As the current Director and Head of the School of Management at the University of Bradford, I am fortunate to be now leading (since March 2025) the triple crown Management School at the University of Bradford (voted four consecutive years for social mobility) and proud to have a diverse and inclusive group of colleagues from across the globe who work hard to enhance the students’ learning journeys.
Previously, I was Director of Hull University’s Business
School (HUBS), and during this time, I brought the first hybrid PRME (Principles
of Responsible Management in Education), conference to the University. This is because sustainability is at the
heart of everything I do, and today I am continuing to support my colleagues in
Bradford University with the PRME criteria and ethics which underpin all of our
reputable programmes. Bradford is a very
entrepreneurial University with the Management School placing enterprise at the
heart of the learning environment, and using experiential learning pedagogy
throughout all of its curricula to prepare its students for the outside world.
I have published papers in this subject area during the last fifteen years.
My professional goal is to provide a strong student
experience for all students (UG, PG or research students) so that they learn in
an enjoyable and interactive environment.
Adding value to programmes so that students gain extra skills is a
priority of mine, as I appreciate the sacrifices that many students make when
they commit to a programme of study in Higher Education. The student learning journey is a challenging
but an exciting one, which I am fortunate to have witnessed extensively over
the decades, as all students are unique for it is a pleasure to see such
positive progression. I particularly
enjoy working with disadvantaged pupils in schools and colleges, preparing them
for a life at University. Being a first-generation to attend University myself, I feel the need to give back and to
support all those young people who deserve a chance to develop and learn.
Although I have been in Education for more than thirty
years, I am still learning myself, and I am constantly wishing to share best
practice with my colleagues. Hence, in
2015, I applied and gained Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy
(HEA) and in 2020, I gained the UKAT personal tutor advisor award. Hence, I am constantly striving to improve my
skill set so I can try to make a positive difference. In 2021, I finally gained Principal
Fellowship of the HEA.
Finally, having worked in Triple Crown Business Schools and
led several successful reaccreditation submissions since 2014, I am experienced
in liaising with external stakeholders. For
example, my first successful lead was at Salford University, where I gained AMBA
twice, first in 2014 and then again in 2017.
This initial taste of achieving a positive inspection provided a strong
foundation for then leading AASCB and EQUIS submissions, later in my career. Further, I have been involved in more than ten
Ofsted inspections during the last twenty years, at schools, FE colleges, as
well as universities.
Having had the opportunity to work in a Red-brick University, a Russell Group University, a post 1992 University and a private University, all at senior levels of management, I am constantly using my knowledge and skills to enhance the students’ learning experience. I am also striving to improve the rankings of the Business Schools where I have worked as a senior leader, as well as introducing innovative pedagogies and establishing new ways of enhancing staff development. Adding value in this disruptive, dynamic and digital environment is what motivates me to contribute to the HE sector.
My research area is concerned with culture in the classroom particularly with a focus on international students since I have published in the area of internationalisation in several educational journals, both domestically and globally. However, I tend to investigate initiatives in pedagogy and disseminate my research (mixed methodology) in educational journals where I share best practice. For example, I undertake research in the area of peer assessment, group work and interactive pedagogies within the UG and PG classroom. By reviewing for seven academic journals of which four are in the education domain also keeps me abreast of the recent trends in Higher Education.
