Dr. Sarath Rathnayake

Biography

Sarath Rathnayake joined the University of Bradford in October 2024 as a Senior Research Fellow in Health Informatics. Sarath's research interests include eHealth, mHealth, co-design, and the care of older people, including dementia care. Sarath obtained his first degree in Nursing from The Open University of Sri Lanka (2008). He completed a Diploma in Nursing at the School of Nursing, Kurunegala, Sri Lanka (2000), an MSc in Nursing (by Research) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Malaysia (2015), and a PhD at Griffith University, Australia (2020). His PhD project focused on designing and developing a smartphone application to support family carers of people with dementia in addressing the functional disability care needs of their care recipients.

Before joining the University of Bradford, Sarath served as a Lecturer and a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Nursing, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka (2011–2024). Prior to that, Sarath worked as a Nursing Tutor at the School of Nursing, Kurunegala, Sri Lanka (2008–2011), and as a Registered Nurse at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (2000–2006).

My research interests include eHealth and mHealth, older people care, dementia care, co-design and mixed method studies.

This study aims to assess the prevalence of physical function, pain, depression, lung function and QOL and the effect of a 12‑week Tai Chi program on physical function, pain, depression, lung function and QOL among older people living in aged care homes in Kandy District, Sri Lanka.
