Biography
Dr Cooke joined the University of Bradford in2017. He is an Associate Professor in Material Science and Engineering and Director of Post-Graduate Research. Before comingto the University of Bradford Dr Cooke served as Programme Director of MechanicalEngineering at the University of Technology, Jamaica. He was awarded a PhD inMaterials Engineering from the University of Calgary in 2011, which focused ontransient liquid phase diffusion bonding of particle reinforced aluminium alloys.His qualifications also include a B. Eng. with honours and an MPhil from theUniversity of Technology in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA in Managementfrom Patten University. Dr Cooke is a reviewer for several internationaljournals illustrating international recognition in the main field. In 2013, hewon the prestigious University of Technology, Jamaica President ResearchExcellence Award for research excellence in surface and interface engineering. DrCooke is also a chartered engineer (C.Eng.), a Member of the Institution ofEngineering and Technology (IET), a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy(FHEA) and a Member of the Caribbean Academy of Science.Research
His research interests are highly interdisciplinaryand centres on the synthesis, processing and characterisation of novelstructural and functional materials for a wide range of technologicalapplications. His current and evolving research interests involve identifyingand for functionalising solutions for the protection of engineering componentsby designing surfaces for improved wear and corrosion performance in aggressiveoperating environments.Dr Cooke’s strength in research and innovation supportshis work with industry partners. Pastresearch projects included the development of coatings for low frictionapplications, wear and corrosion resistance, increase wettability, andcontrolled melting for use in welding and joining. These areas overlap with tribology,welding, and joining as well as various additive manufacturing techniques forproducing surface coatings. He has previously used methods such aselectrophoresis, thermal spraying, case hardening, surface hardening using wirearc and vacuum diffusion bonding. The findings of these studies are availablein several prestigious journals, leading conferences and books.
