Biography
Dr Maria Azmanova holds an MChem (University of Bradford, 2018) and a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry (University of Bradford, 2022). Maria is appointed as a Lecturer in Medicinal Chemistry in the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences. Maria is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK (2024) and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC). She has experience in leading, developing and accreditation of innovative programmes of study in life sciences at an undergraduate level, including MPharm (GPhC). Maria has experience in the field of student progression and attainment, with a focus on life sciences and international students. Her research interests and expertise range from laboratory-based research such as inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, metallodrugs with anticancer/antibacterial properties, oxidative stress in cancer therapy, as well as educational research around learner analytics and early indicators of student engagement.
Research
Maria's research lies on the interface of Chemistry and Biology, and it focuses on the design and synthesis of innovative precious metal complexes, and investigation of their biological properties. Maria has combined expertise in drug design and preparation of compounds for biological testing, as well as initial screening of anticancer drugs and follow-up in vitro testing to establish structure-activity-relationships and mechanisms of action. Maria collaborates nationally and internationally in the fields of Organic Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, and Anticancer and Antimicrobial Studies.
