Dr. Douglas Schulz
Biography
I joined the University of Bradford as a Lecturer in Sociology and Criminology in September 2023. Prior to this, I worked as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Bradford International College (UBIC), Research Fellow at the University of Bradford, and Lecturer at Leeds Beckett Univeristy.
I hold a BA (Hons) in Sociology and Psychology, an MA in Peace Studies, and a PhD in Sociology - all from the University of Bradford - which greatly influenced my appreciation for interdisciplinary research.
Research
My research interests include identity, community, heavy metal music, and body modification.
I am particularly interested in exploring how heavy metal fans showcase their identity and group memberhsip throughout the course of their everyday life. I am also interested in how a sense of belonging is the result of ongoing social interaction from mutual music appreciation.
Futhermore, and more recently, I have gained an interest in the American traditional tattoo culture and the concept of 'blackout' tattooing.
As a Research Fellow, I have been involved in a project on working-class creativities with Dr. Yunis Alam and Professor Marcus Rattray. In this project - a pilot study - we explored some of the creative cultures in the Bradford District which are under the radar and may be useful in highlighting what the City of Bradford has to offer in terms of creative culture - in particular in light of Bradford winning City of Culture 2025.
