The years 2013/14 mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Peace Studies at the University of Bradford. The department was established in 1973/4, in the context of the Cold War, concerns over the potential for a nuclear conflagration, and polarization in Western countries over American intervention in Chile and Vietnam.
The Bradford Approach
From the outset, the Department of Peace Studies offered an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complexities of war and the power of peace, which combined scholarly rigour and critical awareness with a concern for practical application.
Peace Studies today
Forty years on we face a different world with different problems and different wars. However, the relevance of a theoretically driven, policy relevant, critical engagement with contemporary trends in the use of violence and the promotion of peace remains. Peace Studies at Bradford, through its undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes, and its internationally renowned and locally engaged research centres, continues to offer an environment in which scholars from all over the world study, research, and debate the future of peace and conflict in the 21st Century.
Our 40th anniversary celebrations this year will comprise a series of events organised around the theme of new agendas for research and new approaches to peace for the 21st Century. These events will be held in Bradford and around the world, and made available through podcasts and live streaming. We hope that these events will provide an opportunity for scholars, alumni, students, and practitioners to engage with Peace Studies at Bradford and join the debate over the future of peace and peace studies.
