Lecture: How TV news shapes the agenda [CANCELLED]

Lecture: How TV news shapes the agenda [CANCELLED]

Location: Norcroft Conference Centre, University of Bradford

Date and Time:
Tue 7 Jun 2016, 18:00 - 19:30

This lecture will focus on TV news, its authority and impartiality, and its potential to have a much greater influence in changing voter's minds and creating a cultural consensus, than other media such as the press.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

William Godfrey, lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering and Informatics, will discuss how the press it largely irrelevant in changing voters' minds as they tend to read newspapers that confirm the views that they already have and that TV news, because of its supposed authority and impartiality, potentially has much greater influence.

This will involve looking at how TV news is constructed and the discussion will focus, not on what is being said so much as on how it is said, looking at the form rather than the content and how the presentation of the referendum might influence its outcome. The lecture will examine how TV news functions in building a cultural consensus about an issue or, as Foucault describes it, a regime of truth. William will argue that the "truth" of the referendum is not about leaving or staying in Europe, but about maintaining the status quo and that what is not being said by the media is just as important as what is being said, and what is missing from the television debate is that the EU referendum is not really about deciding Britain's future in Europe but is about attempting to destroy UKIP and the Eurosceptic right of the Tory party (just as the Scottish referendum wasn't really about independence but about nobbling the Labour Party)

This lecture is part of a series of lectures and webinars which look beyond the headlines and examine some of the key political issues affecting Bradford, the UK and beyond.

Please note, registration for this event will open at 17:30 and the lecture will commence at 18:00.
