Biomedical Sciences Taster Day
Location: Richmond building, University of Bradford
Date and Time:
Wed 18 Apr 2018, 12:30 - 16:00
For BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science, and BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Life Sciences).
Why should we worry about type 2 diabetes?
Find out more about what type 2 diabetes is, why we think it’s becoming more common, how it can be diagnosed in the lab, and what it means for the healthcare services.
In this session, you will take a look at the foods that we all eat during an average day, and what this does to your blood sugar (glucose).
You will have the opportunity for hands-on, practical experience in the laboratory to measure and analyse glucose levels, and find out what these might mean for someone who has type 2 diabetes.
What happens when you eat different types of foods?
There will also be an opportunity to attend a presentation with active audience participation, which will explain what happens inside your body when you eat different types of foods. The presentation will cover what dietary sugar is, how it affects your circulating glucose levels and how the different organs in your body respond to this.
We’ll then look at what happens when there are problems with our body’s responses, for example in type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
