This module aims to build upon the fundamental understanding which students developed during Level 4 and apply these concepts to heat transfer and fluid & particle flows, with a particular emphasis on their applications in the process industries. Students will apply principles of heat transfer to the analysis and design of equipment such as heat exchangers and cooling towers. Principles of fluid and particle mechanics will be applied to the analysis of separation processes such as filtration, sedimentation and cyclone separation. On successful completion, students will be able to solve problems, analyse and design equipment related to heat transfer and fluid and particle separation. These learnings will feed directly into more advanced levels of study in L6, where students will apply the principles in Process Design and in their group Design Project.
