This module aims to:1. Develop a foundational understanding of core political theories and concepts.2. Explore diverse conceptions of the state, challenging the Western liberal state as the default model and examining the varied ways states exercise power in different contexts (e.g., practical, fragile, shadow, developmental, and competition states).3. Enhance political literacy by comprehensively understanding major political frameworks, including but not limited to democracy, populism, Marxism, and feminism.4. Cultivate the capacity to analyse political discourse and structures through their application critically.5. Foster critical reflection on the interconnections between this module and the themes explored in other core modules during semester one.6. Develop analytical skills and academic communication through group discussions, oral presentations, and a written assignment appropriate for first-year university-level study.
