Mass Transfer Operations

Module code: CPE5004-B

Taking a programme led approach throughout, this level 5 module builds on knowledge acquired in level 4 (Design, Build & Test and Fundamentals of Sustainability). It introduces the basic principles of chemical engineering separation processes and mass transfer and then proceed to study the design and operation of separation processes units of operation such as distillation, gas-liquid absorption and stripping, liquid-liquid extraction, membrane separation and crystallisation. The design and operation of these units is taught with environmental and sustainability considerations at the forefront. After completing this module, students will be able to critically evaluate and coherently implement core principles, knowledge and understanding of design of separation processes to meet operation specifications as well as environmental levels on pollutant emission, for example from gas absorption columns and distillation residual products. This module supports two key learning pillars: Process Engineering and Sustainable Engineering. As students progress through their programme, they will dive deeper into these areas, starting with the basics at level 4 and moving towards more advanced topics at level 6 and beyond. All modules align with the Bradford Curriculum and meet the requirements of the IChemE accreditation framework. Download the PDF for CPE5004-B_2025_6.pdf
