Design, Build and Test (Chemical)

Module code: CPE4001-B

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the underlying principles of Sustainable Process Engineering i.e. to give them an understanding of material and energy balances which form the basis of all chemical plant design. The module is based on the Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate (CDIO) principle and so students will engage with a series of design and build challenges. Each student will complete 3 group projects over two semesters. The first two projects will be discipline-specific, and the third project will be a common interdisciplinary project shared with all Engineering disciplines. All three projects will address issues of sustainability and the environment. After completing this module, students will be able to carry out material and energy balances and apply them to the design of chemical and manufacturing processes considering sustainability and the impact on the environment. At a programme level, students will be able to take forward the knowledge gained from this module and apply it in modules at Level 5 and then in the Final Year Design Project at Level 6, when designing plant items and processes with emphasis to sustainability and the environment.
