Industrial Big Data Analysis and Mining

Module code: COS7050-B

Today, large amounts of data are collected from a variety of sources, including smartphones, automotive vehicles, the internet, and IoT devices. This data can be leveraged to society's benefit by evaluating its quality and relevance, integrating with existing information and additional digital resources. Ultimately, the aim is to extract patterns, creating new knowledge for decision support in domains such as engineering, healthcare and wellbeing, and society sustainable development. Large amounts of data, however, create continuous challenges for relevant and practical use in industry. This module is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the principles, tools, and techniques used in data analysis and mining, to analyse and extract valuable insights from large datasets in industrial settings, providing data-driven innovative engineering solutions. The module covers the entire data lifecycle, from data collection and storage to preprocessing, analysis, and visualization. The module is aimed at graduates in Engineering, Management, Data Analytics, Computer Science, and related fields to acquire practical experience and advanced knowledge in applying data-driven machine learning techniques to support effective decision-making based on big data. Students will explore key topics such as big data, data mining methodologies, and machine learning algorithms, all tailored to real-world industrial applications. Through hands-on projects, learners will develop practical skills in using popular tools like python and Google Colab, enabling them to tackle complex problems in fields such as Engineering. Students will explore how machine learning applied to industrial big data resources can support knowledge discovery for decision-making in domains such as industry 4.0, product design and development, and product quality management. Lastly, the module will address legal, social, ethical and professional considerations, preparing students to make informed decisions in their future careers. By the end of the module, students will be equipped with the critical thinking and analytical skills necessary to leverage big data for strategic decision-making, fostering innovation and efficiency in various industries.
