Module Aims

You will be able to develop and implement research strategies and methodologies relevant to sociology and criminology, including knowledge and understanding of (qualitative and quantitative) research methods and approaches to analysis (LO 1,2,3). You will also develop an understanding of key concepts, issues and debates involved in the theory and practice of social research (LO 1,2,3).

Outline Syllabus

You will develop a range of research approaches across the quantitative and qualitative spectrum.
You will be taught a variety of methods including the challenges and benefits of qualitative and quantitative methods.
You will know the terrain of research via reviewing the literature.
You will move from theory to practice including how research on paper is operationalised in the real world.
You will learn about researching ethically.
You will develop an awareness of impact and outcomes of research using examples from the field.
You will design your own research project, from inception to dissemination.
