Module Aims

To introduce concepts necessary to analyse contemporary society, politics and welfare and to provide a basis for further study; to provide a knowledge base on the core political and social features of the modern UK; to introduce you to the theories and analytical tools necessary to understand debates and public discussions on contemporary social policy and the modern welfare state in the UK.

Outline Syllabus

Theoretical frameworks within social policy; the post-1945 history of social policy development and implementation in the UK.

Foundations of the welfare state; social policy provision in health, housing, social security, education and social care.

Political parties, governance and the British State.
