Module Aims

You will discuss a number of key theories which aim to answer the question: 'What makes us the way we are?'  It will introduce you to some of the key themes and topics within psychology, such as neuroscience, child development and mental-illness.

Outline Syllabus

What makes us the way we are?

1. Five different approaches in psychology: Neuroscience, Cognitive, Developmental, Social and Clinical.

2. Exemplars of theory and research in psychology: Cognitive Psychology - focusing on the topic of memory (models of how memory works and reasons why we forget), Developmental Psychology - focusing on the topic of Moral Development (how do children develop a sense of morality and when do they know right from wrong), Social Psychology - focusing on the topics of Conformity and Obedience (what makes us go along with the crowd and how strong is the urge to obey authority).

3. An introduction to the Foundational thinkers of psychology and explore how their research remains relevant in contemporary research.
